Alonzo S Bell Sr

Alonzo Steven Bell was born on December 13, 1955 to his parents, Leon James (L.J.) and Mattie Bernice Bell in Chicago, Illinois. Affectionately known as “Stevie” he was the ninth of fourteen children. Among his siblings included: 1. Jerry, 2. Barbara, 3. Ella, 4. Leon, 5. Alberta, 6 and 7 Shirley and Sheila, 8. Diane, 9. Alonzo (Stevie), 10. Calvin, 11. Patricia, 12. Mattie, 13. Carol and 14. Olivia Laverne. Stevie accepted Christ at an early age and was a member and usher at the Christian Missionary Baptist Church and later got baptized and became a member of the Apostolic Church of God located in Chicago, Illinois. Stevie attended Yale Elementary School and Fenger High School. After receiving his GED he enlisted in the United States Army and was proud to serve his country and loved being a veteran. After returning home from the Armed Forces, Stevie met Carolyn Johnson and from this relationship they were blessed with two loving sons, Alonzo Steven Bell Jr. and Calvin Bernard Bell. Stevie was employed as a facilities management personnel during his employment career. He was a hard worker and loved his jobs but enjoyed living life and spending time with family and friends even more. He worked at Mahalia Jackson Elementary School, Fenger High School and Kohn Elementary School where he took early retirement. Stevie loved music and taught himself how to play the drums - he could pick up a song easily by ear when he was young and would always thump beats whenever he sat at a table. He would sometimes make up songs - he was so creative and funny when it came to making up songs! When he started making money he would routinely visit the music store to buy albums. He loved listening to the O’Jays, Johnny Guitar Watson, Ohio Players, Average White Band, Bee Gees and the Temptations to name a few of his favorites. He loved his music and also loved to dress…he would swear that he was the best dressed growing up in the Roseland neighborhood! In the early 80s Stevie reunited with Donna Ellison who he grew up with before moving to 103rd Place and they fell in love and was joined in matrimony on December 18, 1982. Together they raised four children: Shaun Ellison, Christine Ellison, Jonathan Bell and Shalonda Bell. As complicated as Stevie could be sometimes there was never any doubt that he loved his family! His heart was full of love and he never missed an opportunity to tell you that he loved you even when his actions did not always align with his words. He had a genuine heart which was palpable and felt to all that truly knew him. Alonzo “Stevie” Bell made his transition to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 18, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents L.J. and Mattie Bell, his brothers Calvin and Jerry, his sisters Shirley, Olivia Laverne Bell, Diane Allen and Patricia Bell and his special friend Virginia Futrell. He leaves to cherish his memory: his children, Alonzo Steven Bell Jr. (Angela), Calvin Bernard Bell, Jonathan Bell, Shalonda Bell Miller (Marcus), Shaun Ellison (April), and Christine Ellison, his sisters Barbara, Ella, Alberta, Sheila (Vernon), Mattie, and Carol, his brother Leon (Chris), his grandchildren Artemisa Wisdom Bell, Calvin Bernard Bell, Jr., Marika Bell, Grayland Alonzo Bell, Kingston Miller, Kaelynn Miller, Kamaiyah Miller, Jayla Bell, Kaleeyah Miller, and Journey Bell, a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, many cousins and friends. --
