Leonard Augustus Richards.was born September 11, 1926 in Kingston, Jamaica to the late Hilda Smith and Isaac Richards. He was the second of three children born to this union. His brother Austin and sister Vera preceded him in death. His sons Raymond and Donald also preceded him in death. Leonard resided in Jamaica during his adolescent years and received his formal elementary and high school education there. . In the 1960’s he worked for Teletype as a machinist. In 1975 Leonard received his Contractors’ License and opened up his own business entitled “Unity Builders”. He had many clients and was always proud to show off his work. He later expanded this business to include a small food market. In the hills of Jamaica Leonard loved playing cricket and cycling. He proclaimed to win every race. He loved to cook for his family. His favorite dishes to prepare were red beans and rice, curry goat and green banana. He always showed off his children to his colleagues and bragged about sending them to a Catholic school. He was so proud of all of them and stated often that he had good looking children. In his later years he spoke often to everyone about the 400 rounds of daily exercise movements that he did to keep in tip top shape; and he was not shy about demonstrating his movements. Leonard was united in Holy Matrimony to Ruby Powe on July 30, 1960. To this union four children were born; Michael, Cynthia, Dion and Joyce. He later met and married Gwen Frater in 1976. To this union two children were born; Cheryl and Karen. In 1997 Leonard joined the Community of Saint Sabina Church and was a faithful member in attendance until his health prevented him from doing so. He looked forward to going to church every Sunday and would often ask “Is today Sunday”? He looked forward to sitting in his same seat every Sunday and felt out of place if he didn’t get HIS seat. Leonard leaves to cherish his memory his children; sons Omar, Michael (Yolanda), Dion (Delores), and Dwight. His daughters Cecelia, Cynthia (Jerry), Joyce (Andree’), Deserine, Cheryl, Karen and Javonna; 21 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and a host of friends who will miss him dearly.
